Analytics Pro

Updated by Darryl Waterhouse on 13 October 2026 7 min read

Analytics Pro counts the people who visit your site, where they came from, where they are, what they used and which pages they read. It records page views on your own server, uses no cookies and adds no tracking script to your pages.

What it does

  • Counts page views, visits and visitors, with a comparison against the previous period.
  • Shows where visits came from: search engines, social sites, email, paid campaigns, other sites, or direct.
  • Shows where visitors are (country, and optionally region and city), looked up on your own server.
  • Lists every visit with its pages in order, and who is on the site right now.
  • Lets you filter everything by page, source, place, device and more, and save your filters.
  • Exports figures as CSV or JSON, and prints a report.

A visitor is recognised by a keyed fingerprint of their address and browser, not a cookie. The same person on a phone and then a laptop counts as two visitors.

Getting started

  1. Open Analytics Pro from the admin sidebar. If you cannot see it, ask an admin to give your role the Analytics Pro permission (see below).
  2. Pick a period at the top: Today, Yesterday, 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or 12 months, or click Dates to choose your own range and click Show.
  3. Read the Overview. Click any row, such as a page or a country, to narrow the whole dashboard to it.
  4. Admins: click the cog (Settings and display) and check the Tracking section, in particular the time zone and how long to keep data.

Screens

The dashboard has seven tabs. Press 1 to 7 to switch between them.

Along the top are the period buttons, Dates, Filter, Saved and a Bots switch. Bots (crawlers, monitors, scanners and scripts) are recorded but left out unless you turn Bots on.

Overview

  • Figure tiles: Visitors, Visits, Page views, Bounce rate, Average visit, Pages per visit, and new against returning visitors. Each shows the change against the same stretch of the previous period.
  • Traffic chart. Click a tile to chart visitors, visits or page views. Hover a day for its number, click a day to look at just that day.
  • Top pages, Channels, Countries and Devices.
  • Busiest times - page views by weekday and hour, darker for busier. Click a square to filter to that day and hour, a day's name for that whole day, or an hour for that hour on any day. Click it again to clear.

What the figures mean:

Figure Meaning
Visitors Different people, told apart by address and browser.
Visits One visitor's pages with no gap longer than 30 minutes (changeable in settings). Arriving again from a new link or campaign starts a new visit.
Page views Every public page that loaded, reloads included. Images, scripts, the admin, the API, redirects and "not found" pages are not counted.
Bounce rate Visits that saw one page and left.
Average visit From a visit's first page to its last. A one-page visit counts as 0 seconds.

Visitors

Every visit in the period, newest first: where they were, where they came from, what they used, and the pages they read in order. Use the search box to look through pages, sources, places and devices. Click a visit to see only that visitor across the dashboard.

The visit's menu (right-click or the three-dot button) has Filter to this visitor, Filter to where they came from, Open the landing page and Copy the pages visited. Admins also get Copy the IP address, Don't count this address and Forget this visitor....

Pages

All pages (views, visitors, landings, exits and average time on the page), Landing pages (where visits started) and Exit pages (where they ended).

Sources

  • Channels - Direct, Organic search, Social, Email, Paid, Referral or Campaign.
  • Where from - the sites that sent visitors.
  • Campaigns - from utm_campaign tags on your links.

Tag links in newsletters and adverts with utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign to see them here.

Locations

Countries, Regions and Towns and cities. Regions and cities need the Country, region and city setting. Location data is by DB-IP (CC BY 4.0).

Technology

Devices, Browsers and Systems.

Live

Visits with a page view in the last 5 minutes, refreshed every 15 seconds while the tab is open, each showing the page they are on now. The period and filters do not apply here.

Filters

  • Click any row to add an "is" filter for it. Its menu also has Exclude this, and Open on the site and Copy the address for pages.
  • Click Filter to build your own: pick a field, a test and a value, then Add. Every filter must match. Suggestions come from the period on screen, and values are not case-sensitive.
  • Active filters show as chips under Showing only. Click a chip to remove it, or Clear all.
  • Saved > Save these filters... keeps the set under a name you choose, in this browser. Pick it from Saved to bring it back.

Fields: Page, Day, Hour, Landing page, Exit page, Source, Channel, Campaign, Country, Region, City, Browser, System, Device, Visitors (new or returning), Visitor, IP address (admins only), Pages in the visit, Visit length (seconds).

Tests: is, is not, contains, does not contain, starts with. Number fields also have more than and less than. You can have up to 20 filters.

Cards

Each breakdown card has its own menu (three-dot button): show it as a list, table or tiles, Use the default style, Export CSV and Copy as a table.

Export and print

The Export and print button in the banner offers:

  • Printable report (print or save as PDF) - opens a report page. Use your browser's print dialog to print it or save it as a PDF.
  • Every page view, Every visit, Summary figures, Traffic by day (or by hour) and A breakdown - each as CSV (spreadsheet) or JSON.
  • Everything on screen (JSON).

Exports cover the period and filters on screen.

Setting What it does
Count visits Off stops recording new page views. What is already kept stays until it ages out.
IP addresses Keep in full (shown to admins), Masked (the last part dropped, the default) or Not kept.
Keep whole referring addresses Off (the default): where a visitor came from is kept as the site and page only. On: everything after the ? is kept too, which often carries the other site's session ids or search terms. The Sources figures use the site name only, so Off loses nothing.
Locations Country (about 8 MB download), Country, region and city (about 130 MB) or Off. The database is downloaded to your server and refreshed monthly; Update now refreshes it at once. Nothing is sent to anyone else.
Returning visitors Recognised across days, or Forgotten each day (the fingerprint resets at midnight, so nobody counts as returning).
A visit ends after (minutes) Time without a page view before the next one starts a new visit. Default 30.
Time zone Days and hours on every chart use this zone. Default Europe/London.
Keep data for 30 days, 90 days, 180 days, 1 year or 2 years. Older page views are deleted each night. Default 90 days.
Don't count these addresses One per line: an address, a range (192.168.1.* or 10.0.0.0/8) or an IPv6 prefix. A button adds your own current address. Past visits are not removed.
Don't count these paths Pages whose address starts with any of these are never counted. The admin and the API are always left out.

The Analytics Pro sidebar item shows how many visitors were on the site in the last 5 minutes. Hover it for on the site now, page views today, page views in the last 7 days and the pages being read now.

Permissions and roles

Analytics Pro adds one permission, shown in System > Roles under Plugins:

Permission Action What it allows
Analytics Pro (analytics-pro) View Open Analytics Pro and see its figures.

It is granted to the Admin role. Give it to other roles in System > Roles if they should see the figures. Users without it do not see Analytics Pro in the sidebar.

Some parts stay with admins (Admin and Super Admin) whatever the permission: IP addresses, the IP address filter, the Tracking settings, Don't count this address, Forget this visitor... and Update now for locations.

Privacy

  • No cookies and no tracking script, so Analytics Pro needs no cookie consent banner of its own.
  • To act on a data request, find the person's visit on the Visitors tab and use Forget this visitor... (admins). It deletes every page view of that visitor and cannot be undone.
  • IP addresses are Masked unless you choose otherwise; Not kept stores none at all. Referring addresses are kept without their query string unless you turn Keep whole referring addresses on.
  • The sidebar badge and the dashboard figures are refreshed at most once a minute.

Tips

  • Add your own office address under Don't count these addresses so your own visits do not inflate the figures.
  • Use Busiest times to pick when to post or send a newsletter.
  • Save the filters you use often, such as "Blog pages" or "From the newsletter".

Limitations

  • The printable report is printed or saved as PDF by your browser. There is no PDF download.
  • The period cannot go further back than the Keep data for setting.
  • A visitor who changes device, browser or network counts as a new visitor.
  • Saved filters and display choices are kept per browser, not per account.
