Personality Quiz
Updated by Darryl Waterhouse on 3 November 2026 · 7 min read
Put "Which one are you?" quizzes on your website. There are no right or wrong answers: each visitor answers a few questions and gets the result that fits them best - "You are the Oak" - with a button to whatever you want them to do next. Ask for an email address before the result and every quiz also collects leads. Personality Quiz is a Pro Tool, and can be gifted to a site.
What it does
- Outcomes - what people can turn out to be. Two to eight per quiz, each with a title, a description, an optional picture and an optional button (for example "See our oak range" linking to a page or another website).
- Questions with one choice each, and an optional picture. Each answer gives points to one or more outcomes. The outcome with the most points at the end is the result.
- Ties go to the outcome higher in your list. Drag the outcomes to set the order.
- Warnings while you edit: an outcome that no answer gives points to is marked "No answer leads here" (nobody could ever get it), and an answer that gives no points says so.
- One question at a time, with a progress bar and a Back button, so visitors can change their mind. Questions and answers can be shuffled.
- The result shows the outcome, its picture, its description, its button, Share (which shares the outcome's title, never the answers) and Take it again.
- Leads (optional): ask for an email, and a name if you like, before showing the result, with a consent tick box. See who got what, download the list as a spreadsheet, and add people who ticked the box to your Contacts.
- Stats for every quiz: how many people took it, how many finished, which outcomes they got and how each question was answered.
- Which answers lead where never reaches the visitor's browser. The result is worked out on the server, so nobody can read the "answers" from the page.
Getting started
- Switch Personality Quiz on in Tools.
- Open Tools > Games > Personality Quiz and choose New quiz.
- Give it a title, and write your outcomes (at least two).
- Add questions. Under each answer, type the points it gives to each outcome - usually 1 for a match and 2 for a strong one, 0 for the rest.
- Press Test and take it yourself (see below).
- Set the status to Open and save.
- Put it on any page:
[personality-quiz id="which-tree-are-you" /]
The short name (which-tree-are-you here) is made from the title, and shown with the shortcode in the editor - press Copy there.
Writing a good quiz
- Five to ten questions is plenty. Every answer should point to at least one outcome.
- Give each outcome about the same number of chances. The Stats screen shows if one outcome comes up far more than the others - change the points to even it out.
- Use 2 points for an answer that strongly fits an outcome and 1 for a weaker fit. An answer can give points to two outcomes at once.
- Write the outcome descriptions to be pleasant to share. Visitors share the outcome's title.
Settings for each quiz
The quiz
- Title, Short name (used in the shortcode) and Introduction (shown above the Start button).
- Picture - shown at the top of the start screen. Press Choose… to pick one from Media (or upload one), or type an address.
- Status - Draft (not shown anywhere), Open (can be taken) or Closed (the page says it has closed). Test works whatever the status.
Taking it
- Name - ask for a name (optional), ask for a name (required), or do not ask. The name is used on the result ("Sam, you are...") and is checked for rude words.
- Shuffle the questions / Shuffle the answers - a different order for each visitor.
- Animations - answers pop in. Visitors who ask their device for less motion never see them.
Leads (off unless you switch it on)
- Ask for an email before showing the result.
- The email is needed to see the result - when on, there is no way round the form. When off, visitors can press Skip and still see their result.
- Ask for their name too - an optional name box on the email form.
- Add leads to Contacts (only when the Contacts Tool is on) - everyone who ticks the consent box is added to Contacts, with a note of the quiz and the outcome they got. Contacts belong to a person, so the leads go into the Contacts of whoever switched this on (the editor says whose). Someone already in those Contacts with the same email gets the note added instead of a second contact.
Outcomes - title, description, and under More: a picture, the button's words and the button's link (a page on your site such as /shop, or a full https:// address).
Questions - the question, its answers (two to eight) with their points, and under More: a picture.
Settings for the whole Tool
Press the cog at the top of the Tool:
- Consent wording - the words beside the tick box on every quiz's email form. Say plainly what people agree to. Each lead keeps the exact words they saw, so changing this later never changes what someone agreed to. Ticking the box is never needed to see a result.
- New quizzes need an email to see the result - what a new quiz starts with. Each quiz has its own switch after that.
- Raise a notification for each new lead - see Notifications below.
Testing a quiz
Test (in the editor, on each quiz in the list, and at the top of its Stats and Leads screens) opens the quiz right there in the admin, exactly as your visitors will see it - the same questions, the same email form and the same result.
- It uses the version you last saved. With unsaved changes the button says Save and test, and saves first.
- It works whatever the status, so you can try a draft before anyone can see it.
- A test go is never counted in the stats. An email typed into the test is not kept and raises no notification.
- Each new test clears away the one before.
Stats
Stats shows, for each quiz:
- Took it (everyone who started), Finished and the Completion rate.
- Leads and what share of finishers left an email (when the quiz collects them).
- Outcomes - how many finishers got each one, as bars.
- How each question was answered - every answer's share, counting everyone who answered that question, finished or not. A question many people stop at shows up here.
- Latest takes - remove one with its ×, or Reset the stats… to start again. Leads are never removed by this.
Leads
Leads (on the quiz's row, its menu, or its Stats screen) lists everyone who left an email, newest first: name, email, outcome, whether they agreed to be contacted (hover over Yes to see the words they agreed to), and whether they were added to Contacts.
- Download CSV - the list as a spreadsheet file (opens in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets).
- Right-click a lead (or its ⋮) to copy the email address, email them, or delete the lead.
- Delete all… removes every lead of that quiz. Download them first if you need them.
- Only email people who ticked the consent box.
The sidebar shows how many new leads have arrived since you last opened each quiz's Leads screen. With no new leads there is no number.
Notifications
Two kinds, both switched off until you choose who gets them in Notifications settings:
- Personality Quiz leads - each new lead, with the outcome they got (and a note when they did not agree to be contacted). Also needs Raise a notification for each new lead on, under the cog.
- Personality Quiz daily summary - each morning, how many people took each quiz the day before and how many left an email. Nothing is sent on a day nobody took one.
Moving quizzes between sites
Export a quiz from its menu in the list (right-click it, or ⋮), or from the download button at the top of its editor. Export all at the top of the list puts every quiz in one file. The file holds the quizzes - outcomes, questions, answers and points - never the takes or the leads.
Import… at the top of the list adds the quizzes in such a file to this site:
- Each arrives as a draft, beside what is already here - nothing is replaced, and nothing goes live by surprise.
- If the short name is taken, it gets a number on the end (
which-tree-are-you-2). - Add leads to Contacts is switched off on an imported quiz: switch it on again to send its leads to your own Contacts.
- A quiz in the file that cannot be used (no title, for example) is skipped, and the message says why.
Gifts
Personality Quiz is a Pro Tool. Domma can also gift it to a site, for good or for a set number of days. When a gift for a number of days ends, the Tool switches off; the quizzes, stats and leads are kept and come back when it is switched on again.
Questions
Can visitors see which answer leads where? No. The points stay on the server; the page only ever has the question and its answers, and the result arrives after the last answer.
What if no answer gives an outcome any points? Nobody can get it. The editor marks it "No answer leads here" and the list says how many outcomes nobody can get.
What happens on a tie? The outcome higher in your list wins. If nobody scores any points at all, the first outcome is the result.
I changed a question while people were taking the quiz. Adding, removing or moving questions or answers starts anyone part-way through again, so their answers always line up. Changing only the words or the points does not.
Does someone have to tick the consent box? No. The box is always optional; the lead is kept either way, marked Yes or No. Only people who tick it are added to Contacts.
