Halloween is on Saturday, and plenty of pubs, clubs and schools will be running a spooky quiz night. So we built one. The Halloween Serial Killers Quiz is live now, and it is made entirely with two things every Domma CMS site can have: the Quiz Tool and the Halloween celebration you can see drifting across this page.

Play the Halloween Quiz

Update, 26 October: the quiz now has 500 questions in fifty rounds. Forty new rounds cover Halloween traditions and Bonfire Night, horror films old and new, classic monsters, directors, stars, slashers, vampires, werewolves, zombies, witches, Stephen King, Gothic novels, folk horror, horror games, spooky songs, monsters around the world, true crime on screen, the science of fear and more. The main quiz draws 20 from all 500.

100 questions, ten rounds

The quiz holds 100 multiple-choice questions on history's most notorious killers, from Jack the Ripper and Burke and Hare to the Zodiac, BTK and the Golden State Killer. Each go draws 20 questions at random, so you can play again and get a different set. If you would rather work through the lot, every one of the ten rounds has its own page:

  • Jack the Ripper and the Victorians
  • British killers (two rounds)
  • America (two rounds)
  • Around the world
  • On screen and in print
  • Who was known as...
  • How they were caught
  • A mixed bag to finish

You get 30 seconds a question and the answer appears straight after, with a short fact. Type a name at the start and your score goes on the leaderboard. Fastest top score wins.

How it was made

  • Quiz holds the questions. Each quiz has its own settings: a time limit per question, shuffled answers, whether answers show as you go or at the end, and how many questions to draw from the bank. The server keeps the time and marks every answer, so nobody can peek at the answers in their browser.
  • The leaderboard comes with it. Players type a name, and the board can show today, this week, this month or all time.
  • The Halloween celebration is one shortcode, [halloween /], with bats, pumpkins, a witch and a haunted house. Set intensity="light" to keep it out of the way of the content. Use [celebrate theme="auto" /] instead and your site follows the calendar by itself: Halloween now, Bonfire Night next week, then Christmas.

Each page is a short piece of Markdown: a celebration, a sentence or two, and [quiz id="serial-killers" /].

Run one on your site

A quiz is a cheap way to bring people back to a website. Run one for your pub's quiz night, your club's members or your customers, and let the leaderboard do the rest. Quiz is a Pro Tool, alongside Crossword, Word Search and Daily Word. See the Quiz Tool, or ask us to switch it on for your site.

Happy Halloween.
